Ava DuVernay, Kumail Nanjiani and More Celebrate New Members of the Academy

The Academy of Arts and Film Science has become much larger and its members are rolling out the red carpet online.

On Monday, the organization responsible for nominating and voting for the Oscars invited 928 new members. The strong membership expansion is part of the Academy's efforts to diversify its ranks, with 49% of invitations for women actors and filmmakers and 38% for people of color.

The invitations went to a wide range of people, including Mindy Kaling, Tiffany Haddish, Danai Gurira, Kumail Nanjiani, Zoe Kravitz, Christine Baranski, Ben Whishaw and more.

Many incoming and established members celebrated the new class on social media. Kumail Nanjiani grabbed his new membership ad and wrote, "Hey Yo, I'm at the Academy," while Lupita Nyong's current member, shared a video on the Twitter page. of the Academy, saluting Black Panther costar Danai Gurira.

Director Ava DuVernay said: "I hope we can continue to grow the Academy in beautiful and daring places."

The Academy has released a series of similar videos of current members welcoming and congratulating new members, including a video of Steven Spielberg addressing new director members and one of the cast members. Big Little Lies offering congratulations, especially to their comrade Zoe Kravitz.
