Avril Lavigne says the night she "accepted" that she was dying inspired her new album

Avril Lavigne's new album, Head over the water, comes from a very dark place.

The 33-year-old singer was diagnosed with Lyme disease in 2014 and her fight against the disease kept her out of the spotlight for several years.

In a press release for his new music, Lavigne says he is candid about the painful inspiration of his first album in five years.

"One night, I thought I was dying and I had agreed that I was going to die." My mother went to bed with me and lay with me. "Has retained," recalls Lavigne. "I had the impression of drowning myself." In my breath, I prayed, "My God, help me keep my head out of the water."

As scary as it may sound, the moment inspired Lavigne's moving new music. "At that moment, the composition of this album started," she said, "it was like I was looking for something." It was a very spiritual experience, words flowing through me from that moment on. . "

The new song of the singer "Skater Boi", "Head Above Water", talks about someone who is trying not to drown. "My God, keep your head out of the water, do not let me drown, it gets harder, I'll meet you at the altar, as I fall on my knees," sings Lavigne. "Do not let me drown, drown, leave me, do not let me, do not let me drown."

In April, Lavigne spoke with Lauren Zima, ET, during her first appearance on the red carpet in two years. "I feel much better," she said at the time. "I have found my life, which is amazing. It's something that I continue to work every day.
