The father of a baby found crawling on a street in Lakewood last week went to the authorities on Friday and was charged with neglecting a child, police said.

Evgeniy Dorman, 41, went to the cantonal police at 1:15 pm. Friday and was charged with cruelty / negligence of a child, a fourth-degree crime, according to Capt. Gregory Staffordsmith, Commander of the Township Police Detective Bureau.

Passenger driver Corey Cannon, 43, was driving on Joe Parker Road last Saturday when he saw the little boy crawling in the middle of the street, police said. A photo of the baby on the street has sparked great interest online, attracting thousands of actions and comments.

After Cannon stopped to help the child, a neighbor arrived and brought the 10-month-old boy back to his family's home, authorities said.

Investigators learned that the baby had crawled through an open entrance door and made it about 100 feet from the roadway before being found by the good Samaritan, Staffordsmith said.

Detective Michael Cavallo of Lakewood and Detective Stephanie Bayha of the Ocean County Attorney's Office conducted the investigation for a week.

Police said Dorman was released before a hearing.
