When things go wrong in the sport, fans want answers.
After a dominant victory in Week 1 in Arizona, where the Redskins hit the ball in the race match, Redskins fans were expecting another strong performance on the field.
That did not happen in Week 2 against the Colts, and worse yet, there may be no real answer.
"It's very frustrating, it's something we're proud of, it's getting into the running game, and when things go wrong, we're wrong," said Washington center Chase Roullier on Monday.
The statistics are downright lousy.
The Redskins made 22 passes for 65 yards, which is 2.9 yards per race. Adrian Peterson, who has just won an impressive 26-yard, 96-yard run in Arizona, ran 11 times for 20 yards. The leader of the team was wide receiver Jamison Crowder.
Naturally, people want to know what happened.
What was the difference between week 1 in Arizona and week 2, at home, against Indianapolis?
"When you face different defensive teams, different things will have to change in the game plan.We will have to be able to play different games," said Roullier. "We definitely had a list of tracks a little different for this game."
Against the cardinals, the Redskins have found success both inside and out. Peterson and Chris Thompson could not be stopped and the offensive line was excellent.
Against the Colts, the Redskins have found no success on the inside and little on the outside.
"When you run a game and it may not work once, you start trying other things – you may be starting to escape what worked the week before," Roullier said.
The best Washington race of the day was a quick one: a throw on Crowder in the team's first offensive game. Throughout the game, the offensive line has risen and has been pushed back to the point of attack.
"Obviously, they just outpaced us," said Roullier.
This, beyond all that is schematic or strategic, made the biggest difference in the game.
Credit the Colts defensive line to play a rigid and physical game. Indianapolis has also deployed pre-clutch movements and acrobatics on its defensive front.
"You certainly can not identify the lack of yesterday's game on the one move, there was a lot more to do and things to understand."
Redskins fans may want a singular response to the team's dreadful presentation on Sunday.
They will not find him.
For one man, Washington's offensive line said its Colts counterparts won the fight in the trenches. That's the problem.
