The Cleveland Browns announced Monday that rookie Baker Mayfield will take over this week against the Raiders.
The Browns started the season, starting with Bills' Tyrod Taylor with Mayfield, the No. 1 pick in the repechage. It was a new start in the quarter after DeShone Kizer led the team to a 0-16 record last season.
The Taylor Browns started 0-1-1. He suffered a concussion in the second quarter on Thursday night with his team at 14-0. Enter Mayfield.
He immediately lived up to his choice of high draft, completing the passes, escaping the defenders and completely transforming the game.
"I saw the ball spread, the ball went to the right person," coach Hue Jackson said Monday. "I saw the attack start making games up and down."
Mayfield led the Browns to a victory over the Jets on Thursday, 21-17. It was the team's first victory in 635 days and sparked celebrations in Cleveland, unpublished since N.B.A. title of 2016.
Mayfield finished 17th for 23 for 201 yards with an adjusted yards per attempt of a solid 8.7. Taylor has a figure of 4.9.
Coach Hue Jackson said Taylor would become the replacement and said there was "a good chance" that he would be ready if he was called next week against the Raiders, although he did not practice on Monday. The Browns are 3-point underdogs on the road.
Jackson told reporters from pressure on rookie Mayfield: "I think he can cope with it. He demonstrated it.
Modern Browns have had a horrible history with the quarterbacks. Since the reform of the team in 1999, 29 different actors have started there for the team. This week, Mayfield will become No. 30.
Prior to Mayfield's supreme relief, it was a mixed start for the announced class of rookie quarterback. The third choice, Sam Darnold, has started since the first week with the Jets, although its number is small. The question now is whether Mayfield can lead the Browns to fame or even respectability, where Tim Couch, Brady Quinn, Johnny Manziel and so many others have failed.
