Baker Mayfield was "awake really dangerous" Sunday morning and it looked really dangerous Sunday afternoon.
Cleveland Brown's rookie quarterback earned 216 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions in the 28-16 win over the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday. When asked what had motivated her impressive performance, Mayfield responded insolently that her awakening felt ready to play.
A laughing journalist asked him to develop his idea, but Mayfield just doubled his initial statement:
"I woke up feeling really dangerous," he said.
This impressive performance came about less than a week after the team 's front – office broke away from its former head coach, Hue Jackson, who led the team to a 3-36-1 record in two seasons at Cleveland Bar. It is safe to say that the pressure was in Cleveland.
But Mayfield has never feared a great moment. A Heiman Trophy winner on foot in Oklahoma, the 6-foot-1 quarterback has had many moments of greatness – and controversy – during his three years with the Sooners.
After the Kansas Jayhawks refused to shake hands before the draw in their November 2017 game, Mayfield made an obscene move toward the opposing bench, en route to a punishing 41-3 win.
A month earlier, the native of Austin, Texas, had planted the Oklahoma flag in the center of the "O" Ohio State Buckeyes in the middle of the field after a victory in force in Columbus.
According to Kimberley A. Martin of Yahoo Sports, it is his somewhat disconcerting, though sometimes undisciplined, personality that has helped him defeat some of his Browns team-mates.
She asked Myles Garrett when he began to believe in the new quarterback of his team, and Garrett answered with a more specific question:
"Do you mean, in person or on television, when I saw him hold his crotch?" Garrett asked. "It was at that moment that I knew that he was different, man, he had something for him."
Garrett said Mayfield had brought the same attitude with him to the NFL.
"I mean, he's a d — … when you have to play it," Garrett added with a smile. "Even in practice, sometimes, I want to cut him by the throat, he talks to everyone."
The other teammates accepted:
"He had a booty around him," said receiver Rashard Higgins. "And the way he comes to work, we just know he's got it."
"He makes a statement like," Hey, we're going to kick your ass. "And we must be like," All right, let's go and do it. We can not turn back now, "veteran offensive lineman Joel Bitonio said of Mayfield's antics. "It's really cool. It gives you something. "
Cleveland is apparently out of his previous role as the target of every NFL joke. The Browns have already improved their terrible seasons of 2016 and 2017, and with an extra win, Mayfield and his teammates can post the best record of the team since 2014.
Cleveland fans will only have to hope that their young quarterback continues to wake up and feels really dangerous on Sunday morning.
