Associated Press

For the first time in 635 days, the Cleveland Browns have found a way to win.

Baker Mayfield showed them how.

Choice # 1 replaced injured starter Tyrod Taylor and prompted the Browns to earn two one-yard touchdown passes from Carlos Hyde and beat the New York Jets 21-17 on Thursday night for their first win since December 24 2016.

And so ends Cleveland's 19-game no-win series, the NFL's second-longest since the AFL-NFL merger in 1970.

The Browns (1-1-1) were led 14-0 in the first period before Mayfield became Taylor and led four scoring campaigns while winning an unexpected match against Jets quarterback Sam Darnold. Cleveland dropped Darnold into the draft and selected Mayfield, the Heisman Trophy winner from Oklahoma.

Mayfield was 17th on 23 for 201 yards in just over half after suffering a concussion.

Darnold had one last chance, but was intercepted by Terrence Mitchell with 11 seconds to go.

The Browns (0-1-1) finished tied with the Pittsburgh Steelers in the first week and lost 21-18 to the New Orleans Saints in the second week. For a team that has not won progress. The Browns are actually favored to defeat the Jets and play at home.

The Browns eliminated an ongoing distraction by swapping troubled receiver Josh Gordon with the New England Patriots earlier in the week. The organization had lost confidence in Gordon after he arrived late for a workout after misleading the team about a promotional video shoot.

The Jets (1-1) were served a dose of reality in the 20-12 loss to the Miami Dolphins in Week 2. They were very strong after dismantling the Detroit Lions on national television . Sam Darnold the second coming of Joe Namath.

Darnold did not play badly, he managed 25 passes on 41 for 334 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions. He behaved like a rookie. Good times and bad times Darnold's performance against the Dolphins is probably a much better indication of how the quarterback will play during the season.
