Gregg Williams will assume the duties of acting coach of the Browns, while Freddie Kitchens will act as acting offensive coordinator. Mayfield called the sudden changes his "welcome to business time".

Like many Browns quarterbacks before him, Mayfield has had a tumultuous rookie season. He did not start the first three games, then picked up Tyrod Taylor in Week 3 and led the Browns to a 21-17 victory over the Jets, scoring their first win since December 2016.
Mayfield and Cleveland were 2-2-1 after an overtime victory over Baltimore, but the bottom was beaten and the Browns lost three games in a row – the last Pittsburgh loss resulted in the return of both Jackson's owner, Jimmy Haslam, said that it was "internal discord".
"For me, it was the first time I lived something like this mid-season, it was surprising on all fronts," said Mayfield. "More specifically, it does not matter if it's one or both, it was just surprising to me, I have never experienced this kind of situation."
Mayfield said Williams' first message to the team was "to stay united".
"It's what it is, but we have to go ahead," said Mayfield. "We have a match this week and it's the most important part, we can use it either as an excuse to throw in the sponge, or to get up and get together as a team."
