CLEVELAND, Ohio – Quarterback Baker Mayfield scored 29 of 42 goals for 297 yards and two touchdowns in the Cleveland Browns' 37-21 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday afternoon at FirstEnergy Stadium. Mayfield was intercepted once and sacked twice. Tyrod Taylor briefly replaced Mayfield and scored one goal on 11 for 11 yards.
Approximate start: It was the first game of Gregg Williams as acting coach of the Browns after the dismissal of Hue Jackson earlier in the week.
Williams, who also plays the role of defensive coordinator, saw the Chiefs rack up 499 yards, 8.6 yards per game and kicked the ball twice.
Oh by the way: The Browns (2-6-1) lost four straight – three more than 15 points.
Mayfield Day: Rookie Mayfield, under the offensive coordination of Freddie Kitchens for the first time, performed relatively well. He seemed more comfortable and played better than in his last three games.
Analysts CBS Sports, Trent Green and Bruce Arians, have generally appreciated what they saw Mayfield.
It's not Mayfield's fault that the Chiefs' high power offensive played with the Browns or that a flat ball was blocked. The defeats of Cleveland's defense, certainly exhausted by the wounds, forced Mayfield and the offensive to play uphill for an overwhelming majority of minutes.
The kitchens obviously tried to get Mayfield out of the pocket and wanted it less dependent on depth. The results were mixed. At the very least, Kitchens and Mayfield eliminated running back Duke Johnson Jr. in the passing game.
Although the performance was a constituent element, Mayfield missed several shots from far. And he made a bad decision / pass that became an interception when the Browns drove late to the fourth quarter. The game did not cost the Browns the game – they would lose, no matter the score – but it can not be ignored.
