Banksy posted a new video on his website on Tuesday involving the partial shredding of his "Girl With Balloon" at an auction in London, which should have been completed.
The video shows the famous anonymous artist who built the shredding mechanism in a flowery frame and who presses a button in a black box to activate the destruction at Sotheby's in London earlier this month. The act shocked the crowd, but the auctioneer, a European collector, decided to buy it for $ 1.4 million, according to the auction house.
Sotheby's did not name the buyer.
The partial shredding suggested that the act was a mounted move to increase the value of a girl's painting seeking a heart-shaped red balloon. The canvas was shredded just above the girl's head, leaving the ball intact. The end of the new video says: "During rehearsals, it worked every time …". A complete shredding of the same pattern is then presented.
The video lasts almost three minutes and is entitled "Shred the Love, the director's cut". She shows hands and a hooded figure (Banksy loves hoodies) in the process of building the mechanism in a studio space, then rolls it outside Sotheby's before the auction. People having fun sipping champagne and nibbling appetizers are some of them, including some in front of the table.
The auction and partial shredding are presented, as well as the work removed from the wall at Sotheby's and executed out of the room.
Banksy never revealed his complete identity. He began his career in spray painting in Bristol, England, and became one of the best known artists in the world. His mischievous and often satirical images include two police officers kissing each other, an armed riot police with yellow smiles, and a chimpanzee with a sign saying "Laugh now, but someday I'll be in charge."
