Shohei Ohtani, the Los Angeles Angels star, intends to finish this season as the team's designated hitter and has not yet decided whether he will be operated by Tommy John.
The 24-year-old rookie says he will be able to return next season as DH, although he may not be able to start again until 2020. He was in the lineup Friday night against the White Sox , beating fifth and hit a three-point homer in his team's 5-2 win.
"Nothing is settled right now," said Ohtani through a translator. "I have some options there. I always try to look at each option. And I'll make a decision, hopefully, towards the end of the season. "
The Angels announced on Wednesday that an MRI showed that Ohtani had suffered further damage in his elbow, and that Tommy John's surgery was the recommended course of action. Ohtani, who throws the right hand and left-handed bats, later hit two home runs that night in Texas.
"The swing does not affect my elbow," Ohtani said. "I feel like I'm progressing as a hitter right now. I get as many experiences as I can while the games count.
Ohtani hits .287 with 18 homers and 47 RBIs. As a pitcher, he is 4-2 with a MSR of 3.31 in 10 starts.
Gregorius returns • The Yankees activated short-cut Didi Gregorius on the disabled list, but he was not in the starting lineup Friday in Seattle. Adeiny Hechavarria was at the shortstop and hit eighth.
"We're going to release him," said Yankees manager Aaron Boone.
Gregorius suffered a left heel injury on Aug. 19 and missed 16 games. The Yankees were 9-7 while he was out. New York takes first place in the category of wild cards AL.
The White Sox lose key perspectives • As the rebuilding White Sox began to form their rotation for the future, they suffered a major setback. The best hope Michael Kopech is injured right elbow and will probably need the operation of Tommy John, said general manager Rick Hahn.
"If there is anything money about it, it will be able to compete unrestricted at the start of the spring training for 2020," Hahn said.
Kopech, 22, has made four recent starts with the White Sox, ranging from 1-1 with an ERA of 5.02.
