The number of Americans living with Alzheimer's disease is increasing – and growing rapidly. Today, 5.7 million Americans live with Alzheimer's disease, including about 200,000 under 65 years old. It is the 6th leading cause of death in the United States. Nearly one in three seniors who die each year has Alzheimer's disease or other dementia.

Every 65 seconds, a person in the United States develops dementia related to Alzheimer's disease. In 2050, a person in the United States will develop Alzheimer's dementia every 33 seconds. The same year, nearly 14 million people will have the disease.

Currently, there is no cure for Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease is devastating not only in people with the disease but also in whole families. In our own country, 39,000 new Mexicans suffer from Alzheimer's disease. They are cared for by 107,000 unpaid caregivers, many of whom are members of their own families.

The Alzheimer's Association is the largest and most influential non-profit funder in the world in the field of Alzheimer's disease and dementia. Currently, the Association's active investment in research totals nearly $ 110 million in 19 countries.

Cognitive decline is a strong indicator of future dementia and, according to figures published by the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, it is a growing burden in New Mexico. In 2016, 12.5% (or 1 in 8) of new Mexicans aged 45 and older report that confusion or memory loss occurs more often or worsens ("subjective cognitive decline"); 33% of those who have memory problems live alone and for those with memory problems that worsen, 58.2% say they have created "functional difficulties". Nearly 54% of people with memory problems did not talk to their doctor or health care provider. If you think you have memory problems, talk to your doctor.
