More than a dozen brewers from the Bay Area and Sacramento have won awards at the Great American Beer Festival last weekend. Presented by the Brewers Association, the Colorado event is the largest beer competition in the world – think of it as the Oscars of Beer.

GABF awards prizes to 102 different beer categories and the competition is fierce. This year, judges received almost 8,500 applications from approximately 2,400 breweries in the United States.

It's particularly exciting that a brand new brewery wins a medal – a sign of more great things to come – and this year saw two promising local debuts: Original brewing in Oakland and Alaro brewery in Sacramento. The original design was ranked second in a Belgian Call of the Void category, which is the second beer brewed at Original Pattern. Meanwhile, Alaro won a gold medal in the English-style IPA category for his Castillo IPA.
