BBC journalist Rachael Bland passed away after being diagnosed with breast cancer two years ago.

The 40-year-old died in the early hours of the morning, her close family "crushed" by her side.

Sharing the heartbreaking news on Rachael's social media, her husband Steve said, "Our brave, beautiful, wonderful and brave Rachael died peacefully this morning surrounded by her close family.

"We are all heartbroken and the hole that she leaves in our perfect little family will never be filled.

"She will miss us so much but we could not be more proud of what she has accomplished in 40 years, and we are truly comforted by the impact she has had on so many lives.

"Thanks, Steve and Freddie xxx."

The mother of one, a native of Cheshire, was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer in November 2016.

In April, doctors inflicted on the family the hard blow that Rachael's breast cancer was incurable.

Her only hopes rested on a clinical trial, which she began in May. But within two months, the tests showed that his cancer had spread.

On Monday, Rachael sent her final message to fans on social media, revealing that she had "only a few days to live," signing a heart-rending "good-bye."

On Tuesday, in a play written by Rachael before discovering that her time was so severely limited, she shared her plans to prepare her husband Steve and their three-year-old son, Freddie, for the day she was gone.

She said she intended to pack 18 years of gifts to make sure her son had a year gift until he was 21 years old.

And the 40-year-old boy wrote a memoir to his son, "For Fred," leaving him with tips, memories, and his mother's words – to guide him in his growth.
