Last week, former members of Beastie Boys, Michael Diamond and Adam Horowitz – Mike D and King Ad-Rock, for most of us – have released their long-awaited memoir. Beastie Boys Book. They have gone through the book, telling great stories in the excerpts published earlier. And last night, they were the guests of Tonight's show. Jimmy Fallon, like any white man of his generation with a minimum of taste, is an unconditional fan of the Beastie Boys. The next dorkout was about what you could expect.
During the show, the surviving Beasties, who did not wear Halloween costumes, told a few stories about their past. They talked about going to clubs in New York while they were too young to go to clubs. They talked about being in the room when Run-D.M.C. and Aerosmith registered Take this path together. (This involved discussing to find out which Aerosmith song was the biggest Aerosmith song, and none of them mentioned the biggest song of Aerosmith, which is "I do not want to miss anything" on Adam Horowitz, which lasted 15 years.
All the while, the Beasties told their stories in a tangent and random way, basically showing why it had taken them so long to get the book together. Mix Master Mike played Ed McMahon. Fallon showed a video of himself synchronizing his lips with "So What'cha Want" in his home while he was in high school. And Fallon endowed the Beasties with boom boxes and mixtapes that he had loved for both of them. Look at the full interview below.
As it happens, last night Tonight's show was pretty much entirely based on New York culture. Desus & Mero were the other guests and the musical guest represented a very different generation of New York rap. It was Sheck Wes from Harlem, who dressed as the Undertaker and played "Mo Bamba" on a fake basketball court. Here is this performance:
