Bedrock, Dan Gilbert's real estate and development division, tweeted Sunday new artist renderings showing a dramatic redesign of its future skyscraper, which is expected to reach 912 feet on the old Hudson Department Store site in downtown Detroit.

"As construction continues on the Hudson site, Bedrock's most ambitious project to date, we are excited to share new renderings with an updated tower." Plans include 912 feet of plans as well only 1.4 million square feet of housing and public space, "said the Sunday morning tweet.

Finish the thin and rather simple rectangular design of the previous renderings, and in its place is a building with stepped dynamic levels, stepped, reaching a sharp summit.

"We are excited about the direction and design of the tower. We believe that it captures a kind of essence of Detroit. It's inspired by history and turns towards the future, "said Jamie Witherspoon, director of architecture at Gilbert, at Crains Detroit Business.

The stepped design "makes it possible to create decks for possible conveniences and spaces" in the building, said William C Sharples, director of SHoP Architects PC, one of the architects of the project, as well Hamilton Anderson Associates, from Detroit, to Crains.

The building should already be the tallest in Detroit, 200 feet higher than the Renaissance Center and among the highest in the country.

JL Hudson's flagship store opened in downtown Detroit in 1891. The project to build what would become Hudson's iconic store began in 1911 and additions continued until 1946. With a roof height of 299 feet and 29 floors, it was the highest department store or retail building in the world for generations, occupying the entire 1200 block of Woodward Avenue. The store closed in 1983 and the building was imploded in 1998.

Plans for the Hudson site include more than one million square feet of retail, office, housing and public space. The height of this building will offer a unique view of the city to all levels, while a market will anchor the sales floor on the ground floor, "A description is available on the Bedrock website for the project, www.hudsonssitedetroit.com.

Joe Guziewicz, vice president of construction at Bedrock LLC, told the Free Press earlier this month that it will take about 14 months before the construction becomes vertical because there is still much to do. At present, the foundations have a depth of 140 feet and go up to the subterranean substratum. The group will seek a foundation permit in November to begin the mechanical and utilitarian work for the basement parking structure.

Gilbert, a billionaire businessman and founder of Quicken Loans, and his team launched the project in December 2017.
