Before the vote, Twitter says that accounts have been removed for "misinformation"

Twitter said Saturday that it had removed a "series of accounts" that was trying to share disinformation, in anticipation of crucial midterm elections, with the media reporting that thousands of accounts had been deleted.

The social media company "has removed a series of accounts for attempting to share misinformation in an automated way – a violation of our policies," she told AFP without giving a number.

Twitter said it has established "open lines of communication" for national election officials, Republican and Democratic campaigners, and the Department of Homeland Security.

According to reports, many accounts were posing as Democrats, posting tweets encouraging US voters not to participate in Tuesday's vote.

CNN said the Democratic Congress campaign committee had alerted Twitter about these accounts, which were removed in late September and early October.

For months, Twitter has sought to eliminate automated and dummy accounts designed to manipulate the public conversation on the platform, in response to concerns about Russia's interference in the 2016 election.

In October, he had announced that his number of active users had decreased by nine million in the previous quarter thanks to these efforts.

US President Donald Trump recently complained that Twitter was withdrawing some of his supporters.
