During his coaching career, Bill Belichick has worked with some of the NFL's greatest players, including the Taylor Taylor Hall of Fame.
Thus, as a football expert and many players, Belichick will often ask questions and seek to compare the current stars to the legends of the NFL.
On Wednesday, the script was scheduled, while a reporter was asking the Patriots head coach whether the Chicago Bears were going past top-ranked goalkeeper Khalil Mack, including Taylor and Reggie White.
Belichick, however, quickly ended the series of questions categorically.
"Wait a minute, you're talking about Lawrence Taylor now," said Belichick. "I do not register anyone in Lawrence Taylor's class – you can put everyone under it – it's with a lot of respect for a lot of good players now, but we're talking about Lawrence Taylor."
Belichick was part of the coaching staff of the Giants from 1979 to 1990, a period during which Taylor terrorized the quarterbacks, so that his high opinion of one of the biggest pass smugglers of the league has a considerable weight.
Mack, who has 45.5 sacks on his career, showed that he was able to resume a game on the defensive side of the ball, but do not expect Belichick to give him the best comparison.
Meanwhile, the Bears will continue to evaluate Mack's ankle injury.
The Bears' coach, Matt Nagy, said Wednesday that Mack was considered "day-to-day" before Sunday's game against the Patriots.
"We're just going to keep an eye on it and be more careful than anything," said Nagy.
Mack was injured in the first half of the Dolphins defeat last Sunday, but played and finished with 62 of 78 shots.
If the ankle injury kept Mack out of the field, it would be a blow to a growing offense. The Patriots found their pace in a series of three straight wins, averaging 39.6 points per game and 462.3 total offensive yards over that period.
