The actor, after spending 40 days in alcohol rehab, said he found the "courage" to express himself: "I am fighting for my family and for myself".
Ben Affleck broke the silence after returning to reeducation, claiming that asking for help was a "sign of courage, not weakness or failure".
In a statement released Thursday on his Instagram account, the actor said he had found the "strength and support" needed to report his illness after recently completing a 40-day stay in a treatment center. for alcoholism in Malibu.
"Fighting addiction is a tough struggle that lasts a lifetime," wrote Affleck, currently on an outpatient basis. "Because of that, we're never really in or out of treatment – it's a full-time commitment – I'm fighting for myself and my family."
He thanked the people who had contacted him on social media about their own addiction experience. "Your strength inspires and supports me in ways that I did not think possible, it helps me to know that I'm not alone," he said. "As I must remember, if you have a problem, getting help is a sign of courage, not weakness or failure."
It was reported that Affleck had started a rehab at the end of August, marking the third treatment of the actor, who had been transparent in his struggles against sobriety in the past.
Affleck completed his last round of alcohol treatment in March 2017. "I want to live my life fully and be the best father I can be," he said in a statement. "I want my children to know that there is no shame in asking for help when you need it and that they are a source of strength for anyone who needs to Help but is afraid to take the first step. "
He also thanked his wife, Jennifer Garner – the mother of her three children, who had filed for divorce in 2017, two years after their separation – for her support. Garner was photographed bringing Affleck to the Malibu treatment center in August.
"I am fortunate to have the love of my family and friends, including my co-mother, Jen, who supported me and who took care of our children as I did for the job that I had set myself " Batman alum said at the time. "This was the first of many measures taken for a positive recovery."
In a cover interview of 2012 with THRAffleck said about his first rehabilitation visit at age 29 in 2001. "I went to rehab for having party too much, not having too many borders and emptying my head and trying to make me idea of who I wanted to be, "he explained. Fighting all addictions is a difficult struggle that lasts a lifetime. Because of this, we are never really in treatment or at the end of treatment. It's a full time commitment. I am fighting for myself and my family. So many people have turned to social media and talked about their own path of addiction. To these people, I want to thank you. Your strength is inspiring and supports me in ways that I did not think possible. It helps to know that I am not alone. As I must remember, if you have a problem, asking for help is a sign of courage and not of weakness or failure.
With acceptance and humility, I continue to avail myself of the help of so many people and I am grateful to all who are here for me. I hope to be able to offer an example to other people in difficulty.
