The controversy surrounding Brett Kavanaugh's appointment to the Supreme Court was created by opponents who had become "desperate" to regain control of the courts, a member of President Trump's cabinet said Friday.
Ben Carson, secretary of housing and urban development, told an annual conference in Washington that opponents of Kavanaugh wanted to "fundamentally change this country". resort to "chaos and destruction".
"And now, they do not consider themselves able to control the courts for another generation," said Carson. "So what's left, chaos and destruction."
Kavanaugh was accused of sexually assaulting a woman in the 1980s, while both were in high school. The judge "categorically" denied the allegations and said he would testify to clarify his name.
Carson, who described the sexual predators as "abominable", then compared the allegations against Kavanaugh with those of Carson, who himself has faced over the course of his career.
He described an incident in which he was accused of having fathered a child out of wedlock. He said that he was not intimidated because "I knew that the only woman I had ever slept with was my wife."
"That said, we must also recognize that there are two sides to every story," Carson said.
Last Friday, the chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Chuck Grassley, extended another extension to Christine Blasey Ford, the woman who accused Kavanaugh of sexual assault, of deciding whether she would testify before the committee about her allegations against Kavanaugh.
