Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton was placed in the injured reserve after being injured in his right thumb in the loss to the Browns on Sunday.
Jeff Driskel will make his first NFL game against the Broncos this week in Dalton's place. The team called quarterback Tom Savage to the San Francisco 49ers' waiver to support Driskel.
Dalton was injured in the fourth game of the third quarter after Billy Price escaped. Dalton went back to recover the ball and tried to get it back, but the Browns recovered. Dalton immediately went to the sideline and in the locker room with athletic trainers and did not return.
Bengals coach Marvin Lewis said Sunday night that initial testing did not reveal anything serious enough to allow Dalton to miss the rest of the season. However, his year is now over.
Dalton has not missed a match since the 2015 season, when he was attempting to tackle after throwing an interception against the Steelers and broke his thumb. Although Dalton avoided the operation, he has not returned this season, missing the last three games of the regular season and the AFC's wild card game. AJ McCarron, who is now with the Raiders, has replaced him.
Driskel completed 17 of his 29 passes for a total of 155 yards and a touchdown in a football half after replacing Dalton after his injury. The Bengals have kept Driskel around since they claimed Niners waivers in 2016. He was the third quarterback of the season and had spent the 2017 season in IR.
"I've always known that I could play at this level," said Driskel. "I would not be here if I could not, but the more you go out and the more you play well, the more you will trust yourself and the people around you will have in you, I just have to keep doing what I do, continue to play well and give the team a chance to win. "
The composition of the Bengals has been decimated by injuries this season. Tyler Eifert, linebacker Preston Brown, defenseman Ryan Glasgow and defenseman Carl Lawson ended up in the IR, but linebacker Nick Vigil and A.J. The Greens have both missed the extended time. Left tackle Cordy Glenn and cornerback Dr. Kirkpatrick are also injured and unable to play.
The Bengals started 4-1 and had a 73% chance of playing in the playoffs after Week 5 by FPI. Since then, they have been 1-5 and have seen their chances in FPI play dive to 4 percent.
