Bert & Ernie are gay on Sesame Street, confirming the biggest mystery of the show

For many years, Sesame Street has managed to capture the hearts of millions of children around the world. But more than staging endearing characters, the show aims to educate children on all issues of life, whether to find this pesky alphabet or to learn what it means to be a friend. But now, one of the biggest mysteries of the show has finally been resolved with regards to the special relationship shared by two iconic roommates. During a recent interview with the Queerty LGBTQ lifestyle website, Saltzman explained how he still considered Bert and Ernie as reflective of his relationship with the publisher Arnold Glassman, even though he was not aimed at any agenda. How could he not? I would say that I would never have said to the editor: "Oh, I'm writing this, it's my partner and me."

However, Sesame Workshop does not agree with Saltzman's assessment of Bert and Ernie's relationship. In fact, they published a statement on Twitter shortly after the interview began to gain momentum, denying that this was true and that Bert and Ernie are strictly friends.

The declaration reads in full:

"As we've always said, Bert and Ernie are the best friends. They were created to teach preschoolers that people can be good friends with those who are very different from themselves. Even though they are identified as male characters and have many human traits and traits (like most Sesame Street Muppets do), they remain puppets and have no sexual orientation.

For some, this may not seem like a big problem, but Sesame Street has become so entrenched in our childhood, it helps to shape who we are and how we see the world. Having a gay couple in the show would allow for greater inclusion of minority groups who deserve a voice. That's what Bert and Ernie would like. At least, that's what Twitter wants.
