How the United States produced the rankings* One hospital earned 25 points for a # 1 ranking in any specialty, 24 points for a # 2 ranking, 23 points for a # 3 ranking and so on; hospitals gained 5 points if they ranked 21st to 50th. The number of points in each specialty was added to determine the total points of a hospital.

The 2018-2019 rankings were created using data collected through a clinical survey sent to nearly 200 hospitals and a reputation survey sent to approximately 11,000 pediatric physicians. RTI International, a North Carolina-based research and consulting firm that also generates top hospital rankings, administered both surveys and analyzed the results.

Some of the types of data collected and analyzed included survival rates of children who had surgery for severe congenital heart defects, infection rates in neonatal intensive care units, complications of kidney biopsies and kidney failure. other care outcomes. Data on the appropriateness of nurse staffing and infection control programs for each hospital were also considered.

The ranking of a hospital depended on its performance in three respects: clinical outcomes, such as maximizing cancer survival and reducing infection rates; effective coordination of care, as evidenced by, for example, adherence to accepted handwashing protocols and other "best practices"; and provide adequate resources for care, such as nurses and ambulatory care programs adapted to specific conditions. Each of these three major regions has determined up to one-third of a hospital's score.

The results of the survey of pediatric specialists contributed up to 15% of a hospital's score, depending on the specialty. Doctors have been asked to name up to 10 hospitals that they consider to be the best in their specialty for children with serious or difficult medical problems. More than 3,000 physicians responded this year. Their responses were combined with those of similar surveys conducted in 2016 and 2017.

The way in which the United States has analyzed and collected the data is fully described in the report on the methodology of the best hospitals for children, available in downloadable PDF format.
