David Gabriel, senior vice president of Marvel in charge of printing, sales and marketing, was criticized for his comments last year regarding the decline in comics sales compared to diversity .
"We watched sales of all the various characters, all the new characters, our female characters, everything that was not a Marvel main character, but people were laughing at us," he said. Gabriel in an interview with iCv2, a publishing firm that presents itself as "the business of geek culture".
Gabriel then explained that his comments reflected what Marvel meant at some retailers in the comic book market and complaints about the "false surrender" of main characters. Marvel's management pointed out that the company was sticking to the new characters and said another reason for the drop in sales would simply be that there was too much product.
