KEARNY – A tug boat that hit the Portal Bridge used by NJ Transit trains on Tuesday afternoon will likely have an effect on the afternoon commute.

NJ Transit said New York's Penn Station was late Tuesday afternoon. NJ Transit and private carries were cross-honoring rail tickets and passes system-wide. Midtown Direct Line trains were diverted to Hoboken. PATH cross-honor NJ Transit Rail Pass and Passes at HOB, NPS and 33rd St., NY.

By shortly after 2 p.m., service had resumed with 45-minute delays.

Amtrak spokesman Jason Abrams said the century-old bridge was struck around 1:10 pm and all trains were halted. An inspected was completed by 2 p.m. strike and service across the bridge. He did not disclose the circumstances of the strike or where it was hit.

This is a breaking story. Check back for additional details.
