Bigger Moons has moons, and some call them "Moonmoons"

Have you ever looked up at the night sky, looked up at the moon and wondered if she could have her own moon?

While you probably did not do it, a curious four-year-old did it in 2015 and on Tuesday, his mother astronomer and one of his colleagues published an article that basically says: Yes, a moon can have its own Moon.

But the real question is: what do you call a moon?

While Kollmeier and astronomer Sean Raymond called them "submoons" in their document, the New Scientist nicknamed them "Moonmoons".

While the International Astronomical Union will probably have the last word, Kollmeier said he had also considered the "Moonlets" and "Moons-of-Moons".

"Internet breaks out with the name A), totally unexpected, and B) very funny! People need to have a little fun, "Kollmeier said.

"I do not vote until I see my son Levi. He was the inspiration for the work and he loves Moonmoon or Moonito or whatever, I have to support him! "

Kollmeier hopes that children, young and old, will be "crazy".

"I am very excited about it. By making possible submoon trajectory calculations and comparing known architectures, we can learn a lot more about the solar system, which is fantastic, "she said.
