We are far from having sent humans on Mars and even more of the transformation of the cold and dusty planet into Earth 2. Of course, Elon Musk could see a future for SpaceX implantations on the red planet, but the TV personality Bill Nye puts a stop to the celebration of the colonization of Mars before it even begins.

Nye, known as Science Guy, told USA Today that humans would not establish permanent settlements on Mars. "This whole idea of terraforming Mars, as respectful as I can be, are you raised?" he said in the interview posted on Monday.

Nye raises some positive points. He says that Mars is not a good option because of its extreme cold, lack of water and the lack of a breathable atmosphere.

The science educator suggests that the Mars settlers would tire of quickly wearing a smelly space suit to venture outside of their protective domes.

Still, Nye thinks we should send humans check on Mars, even though it would be a terrible place to live. "The human explorations of Mars should develop from [International Space Station]and work to extend more and more the human presence in the depths of space ", he told CNET earlier this year.

Musk and SpaceX are already planning an ambitious timetable to send a crewed mission to Mars in 2024 as part of the process of building a city and "finally an autonomous civilization".

Neither Musk nor SpaceX immediately responded to a request for comment.

If Nye is right, humans may someday arrive on Mars, but they will use it as a stopover and not as a home.
