A billboard urging Disney to rehire director James Gunn for the third Guardians of the Galaxy movie has popped up near Disneyland. The billboard turned up on Monday a little more than 4 miles from the theme park in Garden Grove.
The billboard was funded by a GoFundMe campaign put together by fans of the director after he was removed from the third Guardians film earlier this year. Gunn lost the position after conservatives on Twitter uncovered problematic tweets from the director’s past.
The campaign raised over $4,700, giving a company $4,000 of that to run the billboard through November 25. Giuseppe Cincinnato, one of the driving forces behind the campaign to rehire the director, explained why he felt the need to get this message out there.
“We really love Gunn as both a creator and the man we’ve seen him mature into,” the 29-year-old chef from Ohio told The Hollywood Reporter. “Even if this wasn’t going to cause Disney to see their mistake, we could at least show James Gunn how much support he has in his corner of the galaxy.”
Following his firing, there was a general movement across the internet to see Gunn put back in the director’s chair. An online petition garnered over 400,000 signatures while the actual cast of the previous two films pushed for Gunn to be at the helm once more. The Gunn lovers behind the billboard also launched a website to try and advocate for the director who has already been called away to work on the sequel to DC’s Suicide Squad.
“If nothing comes of this, at least we met some amazing people and we did what’s right for James and showed how important he is for us,” Cincinnato said.
