Buffalo's plans for Josh Allen's ascent have been put on hold.
The rookie quarterback will not play next week against Indianapolis thanks to an injured elbow, according to ESPN. Chris Mortensen reported that Allen was injured in the ulnar collateral ligament in the right elbow, his throwing arm, in Sunday's loss to the Houston Texans.
Allen was hit by Jadeveon Clowney and Whitney Mercilus after a 39-yard pass to Kelvin Benjamin's center. The inside of his right elbow seemed to touch the helmet of one of Houston's defenders. He stayed in the game to throw another pass, missing Zay Jones badly on a throw that seemed to cause him great discomfort. Allen then consulted a doctor after the play.
According to Mortensen, an injury to the UCL does not matter as long as the ligament, one of the main structural elements of the elbow, is not torn. Nevertheless, the team does not intend to send Allen back into action, according to the report, while the Bills were fighting at 2-4 and their long-term hopes were based on their first choice in 2018.
Nathan Peterman took part in Allen's Sunday game and led Buffalo to a placement and touchdown for consecutive orders. But he launched a pair of interceptions, including one for a touchdown, on the last two possessions of Buffalo.
Bills coach Sean McDermott said he did not know who would start Sunday against the Colts. Buffalo recently recruited Derek Anderson, a 35-year-old veteran, as a mentor for Allen, who could be immediately on a field mission.
"We'll see," said McDermott, via the Associated Press. "Derek came this week. We will watch the film and see where we are. "
