ST. LOUIS – A white woman who was fired after being watched in video block a black man from entering the loft of St. Louis building where he lives says that the man had no electronic keychain and that he was forced into it. According to KTVI-TV, Hilary Thornton said that 24-year-old Arreion Toles was trying to break into the building Friday night as she slammed the door to let her dog use the restroom .
She said that she was following the instructions of the council of co-ownership to not let outsiders enter the interior when she repeatedly asked where he lived there. "I simply asked if he lived there because the association had given him order … that if you do not know the person, you do not let her in." ", she told the station.
Thornton told KTVI-TV that she had received death threats and denied that she was racist. "It's fake and heartbreaking," she says. "These are words that cut deeply."
Toles recorded the incident on his cell phone and posted videos of the incident on Facebook. The videos quickly garnered 4 million views and were shared more than 100,000 times.
The video seems to show Toles pushing the woman who followed him to the door of his apartment. He added that the police had arrived at his apartment about 30 minutes after entering the apartment, but they left without giving a quote to anyone.
"I was blown away, shocked and appalling," said Toles at CBS affiliate, KMOV. "I'm just happy to have my camera out, if I did not, I think it could have been totally different."
The former employer of Thornton, the property management company Tribeca-STL, said that the interaction "was troubling".
