NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Tennessee Titans quarterback Marcus Mariota was watching from the bench area while backup Blaine Gabbert engineered a comeback victory over the Texans.

With Mariota out with an elbow injury Sunday, Gabbert effectively operated a scaled-down game plan to defeat a Texans defense headlined by several Pro Bowl selections.

Gabbert only threw 20 passes, but completed 13 of them for 117 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions for a 97.3 passer rating. During a 20-17 win, Gabbert was only sacked once and hit twice despite the Titans playing without their three top offensive tackles: Jack Conklin, Taylor Lewan and Dennis Kelly.

"When did you want pressure?" said defensive end J.J. Watt, a three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year who had six tackles, two for losses and one forced fumble with no quarterback hits. "They sat there and they quick-throwed it. They'd throw a quick throw out to the side. They'd have both their running backs chip. They'd have a tight end chip. They three-step [drop]. They ran the ball.

"I don't know when there was a seven-yard drop-back pass that you felt we didn't get enough pressure. They're smart. They knew they had their guys out, so they had a game plan put together that they didn't need to protect against a pass rush like ours. They did a good job of creating a game plan that didn't put their tackles in harm's way."

The Titans promoted tackle Tyler Marz from the practice squad to start opposite tackle Kevin Pamphile.

"Tyler did a heck of a job getting called up to start in his first game against a very good front seven that Houston has," Gabbert said.

The Texans allowed 100 rushing yards on 34 carries.

They surrendered two field goals in the fourth quarter to lose the game.

"It wasn't good," Watt said. "I can only speak for the defense. Obviously we had the one drive in the first half when they went wildcat and we gave up too much. Then the last drive at the end for them to get the field goal, we can't give up those two drives."
