Have the Jacksonville Jaguars reached a breaking point with Blake Bortles?
At least for Sunday, the team has seen enough of its veteran fifth-year passer. Bortles was eliminated in the third quarter of a 20-7 loss against the Houston Texans after losing his second breakaway of the day.
The relief Cody Kessler has replaced him in training. In his second series of the day, Kessler threw a six-yard touchdown to running back T.J. Yeldon to complete a 10-game, 47-yard run. He finished with 156 yards, a touchdown and an interception in 21 out of 30 passes.
Bortles completed six of 12 passes for 61 yards before going out.
"I just did it literally to try to get a spark from this football team," said Jaguars coach Doug Marrone at his post-game press conference, when discussing the move.
The often-criticized smuggler, who was granted a $ 54 million three-year extension early in the season, began to tie for the league with eight interceptions, including six over the past three weeks. He also ranked 28th in 81st.
The Jaguars dropped to 3-4 with the loss.
