KANSAS CITY, Missouri – Sunday was marked by nightmares for many people trying to return home after a stay in Kansas City. Airlines canceled dozens of flights and, at one point, the Kansas City International Airport closed its airfields due to reduced visibility.

Airport officials have asked people who canceled their flights to handle online booking procedures and told them to avoid going to the airport in the blizzard.

Every Sunday, Marcia Waller tried to get her daughter back on a plane to Houston. The original flight has been canceled.

"We are sitting here, we are waiting patiently," said Marcia Waller. "We have tried until now two different standby."

Reserve flights have also been canceled and Waller's daughter will only be able to return home on Tuesday.

"We thought if we had to do it, have a room nearby so we would not have to travel," said Waller. "We live in the south of the kc, so it will be interesting to drive."

Some people went to the airport to book totally new and older flights to get home on time.

It worked for some travelers, like Cate Lacey, who booked a new flight on another airline.

"I thought I could not go to school tomorrow," said Cate Lacey, a high school student traveling to Albuquerque. "But I'm actually going to school."

But others have crossed fingers.

"The day will be long," said Bridget Fortner.

Bridget Fortner and her family are trying to get to Newark but have a connecting flight to Chicago. Their original direct flight was canceled.

"Chicago is supposed to have some snow tonight, so I do not know if we're really going out," Fortner said.

Airport crews alternate cleaning the runways in order to keep KCI open … and flights departing.

"Most of the scheduled arrivals tonight will take place, which means that early morning flights should be operational at the scheduled time," said Justin Meyer, Deputy Director of Aviation's Department of Transportation. Kansas City Aviation.
