Bohls: Aikman is right — the Cowboys are due for a much-needed change – Sports – Austin American-Statesman

While I got ya, here are nine things and one crazy prediction:

1. Fire Jason Garrett. Do it now, if not sooner. My guess is Jerry Jones won’t pull the trigger until after the season, partly because the NFC East is so horrible that every team has a chance, even 3-5 Dallas. But the Cowboys owner needs to go well beyond that and clean house. I agree with Hall of Fame quarterback Troy Aikman, who on Tuesday told The Ticket radio show in Dallas, “If you’re asking me, I’d say there has to be a complete overhaul of the organization. You just can’t simply replace head coaches and say, ‘Now it’s going to be better.’ No, it’s been shown that it’s not better.” Aikman said he’s heard there is “a lot of dysfunction” within the Cowboys walls, “and that has to change if this team is going to be able to compete on a consistent basis like the teams you look to around the league that are seemingly in the hunt each and every year.” Amen to that. The Cowboys haven’t been a consistent winner since their run of three Super Bowls in the 1990s. They’re hardly relevant anymore. How much is enough, Jerry?

2. I don’t know if Jones would consider Les Miles, a former Cowboys tight end coach. I doubt it, but I think new Kansas AD Jeff Long will at least consider the former LSU coach after trying to hire him for Arkansas and tried to money-whip him years ago. KU certainly needs some street cred, and Miles, 64, does have a national championship on his résumé. But I could also see Long kicking the tires on North Texas’ Seth Littrell and Toledo’s Jason Candle or TCU offensive coordinator Sonny Cumbie. I’m not shocked that Long fired David Beaty as the Jayhawks football coach, even with three games left. But don’t make him stay on the job to earn his paycheck. You fired him; you let him walk and get on with his life. Now, will Texas scoop up Beaty, a terrific personality and really good recruiter, especially in the Dallas area? I wouldn’t bet against it.

3. Did you see where UCLA at 2-7 still has a crack at winning the Pac-12 South? That’s a strong testament to how good your conference is? … Texas wide receiver Collin Johnson isn’t about to throw his defense under the bus. “We never play the blame game,” he said. … Sam Ehlinger was asked who might make a good politician on this Texas team. When someone suggested Breckyn Hager, the quarterback said, “He could be. I’d vote for him. For what? For anything. It’d be entertaining.” … You think LJ Humphrey is versatile? Some colleges wanted the talented wideout to play linebacker. He’s never played that position before but probably could. He was a safety as a high school freshman.

4. Tom Brady is the greatest of all time. Period. Aaron Rodgers doesn’t even deserve to be in the same conversation. If anything, I’d put Drew Brees at No. 2. Did you know that Brady has 106 more career wins than Rodgers, has thrown for 27,000 more yards and 177 more touchdowns? Oh, and I think Brady’s got five rings to Rodgers’ one. We’re still having this discussion? … Bill Belichick’s genius was once again on display. When he stuck Cordarrelle Patterson at running back and watched the wide receiver run crazy against the Packers, it was a stroke of brilliance.

5. Keep an eye out for Bella Brown of Round Rock. She plays select softball for Illusions Gold CTX Garcia and has already thrown no-hitters at the state tournament in College Station last June, a national tournament in Dallas in July and another in Gulf Shores, Ala. She’ll represent the state as an All-American pitcher in the All-American Games in Orlando next January. Oh, she’s only 11 years old. She’s been playing since she was 5, and the daughter of Aaron and Brenda Brown “dreams about playing for the Texas Longhorns someday,” her mom says.

6. Texas basketball coach Shaka Smart said to look out for Jaxson Hayes this season. He’s going to be a breakout star for the Longhorns, it says here. The 7-foot freshman from Cincinnati hasn’t been playing basketball all that long. He didn’t play on an AAU basketball team until after his junior season, averaged just six minutes as a high school junior and, Smart joked this week, became the only freshman to ever dunk on the high school B team. “He won’t be a secret much longer,” Smart said, when asked if he was a secret weapon.” He’s going to be really, really good. As much or more than anybody on our team, he has an extremely bright future. His body’s still growing, and he’s gained about 15 pounds. He’ll be 250 pounds in a short amount of time. We expect him to do some really good things.”

7. Sad to see that longtime Austin umpire Tim Henderson died this past week. The one-time Concordia pitcher umpired a jillion Longhorns games and once ejected TCU pitching coach Nolan Ryan out of a game. He always stood his ground and was a class act.

8. Scattershooting while wondering whatever happened to former Texas Tech tight end Adam James, the son of Craig James who has never liked dark rooms and whose reports of mistreatment helped hasten the downfall of Mike Leach as Red Raiders head coach.

9. While my oldest son, Ryan, really liked it, I found “Tag” very silly. Hard to believe it’s a real-life tale about five classmates from a prep school in Spokane, Wash., who continue their schoolyard game of tag for a month every year. Gave it only four ducks.

Crazy prediction: The Jacksonville Jaguars will make a run at Baylor coach Matt Rhule.
