The FBI searched a mail facility near Miami, while investigators are trying to find who is behind a series of suspected packages of explosives.

Devices were sent to eight personalities, including former President Barack Obama and actor Robert De Niro.

Unnamed officials told the US media that investigators thought that at least one had been sent from Florida.

The FBI did not disclose any details of his investigation.

Similar packages were also sent to former Vice President Joe Biden and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, among others.

The investigated postal facility is located in Opa-locka, where security images were examined. A bomb squad and a canine unit accompanied federal officials, Miami-Dade County police said.

Earlier, FBI deputy director William Sweeney confirmed that the white powder found in the package sent to CNN "did not present a biological threat".

Mr. Sweeney said that a thorough review of all parcels was underway at the FBI's Quantico, Virginia, laboratory outside of Washington DC.

New York Police Commissioner James O'Neill could not confirm if all the gear was destined to explode, but he said that the officers "treat them like suspected explosive devices".

"It must be taken with the utmost seriousness," he said. "As for a hoax, we do not treat it that way."

Mr O 'Neill added that the authorities "do not know at the moment" if there were additional devices in the mail. He added that the police worked with the postal service agents "to make sure that, if necessary, we identify them quickly".

On Thursday morning, the FBI announced that Mr. Biden had received two suspicious packages and that a similar package had been found in a New York restaurant owned by Mr. De Niro.

According to the Associated Press, the security guard was at work Thursday and had seen a picture in a report of parcels received by others.
