COSTA MESA, Calif. (AP) – Los Angeles Chargers defensive end Joey Bosa will miss the first game against Kansas City after being relocated to the left foot.

Coach Anthony Lynn said Friday that Bosa's first foot injury healed, but he suffered a new injury in Wednesday's practice. Bosa was first injured on August 7th at the training camp and missed the pre-season.

The Chargers had been cautious with Bosa during the preseason, hoping that another injury would not happen.

"He's really frustrated. He waited a while to get back to the field, "Lynn said. "It's going to be week by week. We hope that it will not linger but that it is possible. "

It will be the first time Bosa misses a game because of an injury since being selected with the third pick in the 2016 draft. He has 23 career bags in two seasons, including an NFL record of 19 in his first 20 games.

Bosa led the team last season in tackles (54) and sacks (12.5), while being second in tackles for defeat (17.5) and quarterbacks (22).

With Bosa's injuries, the Chargers will be without two starters on their defensive line. Defensive tackle Corey Liuget is serving a four-game suspension for breaking the NFL's performance-enhancing drug policy.

Isaac Rochell will have his first start in the NFL instead of Bosa. The sophomore had a significant playing time during the pre-season and led the team into tackles for defeat (3) as well as two sacks.

"Isaac had a great camp. He grew like a weed, progressed and did the job, "Lynn said.

Rochell said the increase in clichés allowed him to develop more confidence and gain the confidence of coaches. He added that "you do not want your coaches to feel in survival mode".

The biggest defense challenge this week will be Patrick Mahomes. The second-year quarter uses its track and field to keep the coins alive, which has led to big gains down the road.

"He has a strong arm but he has the threat to run," Rochelle said. "With the other threats they have, there will be a lot of challenges."

Lynn also said he was expecting narrow winger Antonio Gates to be active for Sunday's game. Gates re-signed with the team on Monday and Lynn said it seemed that Gates had stopped where he had left last season.
