The two directions from I-5 to Tacoma are jammed after collisions between South 38th Street and SR 16 Monday morning.
The collisions, one northbound and the other southbound, involved a semi-truck and a box truck that struck the Jersey gates.
The Washington State Patrol announced that at approximately 2:45 am, a southbound I-5 van truck struck debris on the road, causing it to lose control of its vehicle and strike the Jersey barrier. At least six sections of the barrier have been damaged or have been displaced in northbound lanes, resulting in a multi-vehicle accident in northbound lanes.
About an hour later, half a person taking the same stretch of road, but in northbound lanes, struck the inner barrier and pushed it into southbound lanes.
All traffic heading south is diverted to the exit of 38th Street, which will continue south, I-5.
The crews removed the damaged barriers and replaced them with new ones. They also straighten the barriers that can be reset.
