Dozens of protesters gathered outside the Dallas police headquarters Monday evening to demand justice for Botham Jean, the 26 year old who was shot last Thursday in his own apartment by police officer Amber Guyger. Guyger was accused of manslaughterbut the protesters say that it is not enough. His case is now before a grand jury where his charges could be brought to death, reports Omar Villafranca of CBS News.
According to an arrest warrant, Guyger told investigators that she had gone to her third floor apartment. Instead, she went to Jean's fourth floor directly over hers. Guyger says his door was "ajar" and saw a "big figure" inside. After giving "verbal commands ignored" she fired her handgun twice, hitting Jean once on the chest. It was only when Guyger "turned on the lights" and "called 911" that she realized that she was "in the wrong apartment".
"We will ensure that justice is done in this case," said Dallas County District Attorney Faith Johnson.
Counsel for Jean's family said that two witnesses told them details that contradicted Guyger's account.
"They heard knocking in the hallway followed by the voice of a woman that they thought was the Guyger officer saying," Let me in. Let me in, "said lawyer Lee Merritt.
Family lawyers say that one of the witnesses then heard gunshots followed by the voice of a man.
"What we believe to be the last words of Botham Jean, who was" Oh my god, why did you do that? "Said Merritt.
Allison Jean wants to know what happened to her son. "I'm not satisfied that we have all the answers," said Allison.
"There is really no reason why a mother should wait for an investigation to find out what happened to her child," said Daryl Washington, another family lawyer.
The Texas Rangers, who are conducting an independent investigation, have been arrested about the case. The lawyers of John's family say that he was not armed. They are expecting a large crowd for his planned funeral Thursday at a church in Richardson, Texas.
