A 10-year-old boy from Cleveland was arrested and charged on Friday with the shooting death of his stepmother in September, police said.

The boy's father took him to a police station, where he was placed in custody, reported the Cleveland FOX 8 newspaper.

The authorities believe that the boy, initially identified in police reports as a victim, shot Shavonne Willis on September 26 at his home. She died after an ambulance took her to the hospital, reported Cleveland.com.

The boy was not injured and the cause of the shooting was not clearly defined. He is not identified because he is a minor.

The police first stated that they were looking for a suspect in their thirties. They did not provide details on what led to the boy's arrest.

When searching the home, the police found a gun on a bed, but the police reports did not specify whether it was the same weapon that was used to kill Willis, an elderly 36 years.

Willis' neighbors were stunned to learn that the boy had been arrested.

"I am shocked," said one who refused to be identified. "I saw [him] play a lot there. "

Candles and works of art decorate the front steps of the house where Willis was shot. The words "I love you" are written on a brick facade.

The boy appeared in court on Friday and was sentenced to the Cuyahoga County Juvenile Detention Center until his next hearing on November 5.
