PITTSBURGH (AP) – Brian Boyle scored three times for his first career hat trick, and the New Jersey Devils beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-1 on Monday.
Boyle had his natural hat trick at the "Hockey Fights Cancer" party in Pittsburgh. It included two power play goals and two referrals in net.
Boyle, 33, was diagnosed with bone marrow cancer at the beginning of the training camp last season. He was treated, returned to training last November and won the NHL Masterton Trophy, the best example of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey.
Will Butcher scored one goal and two assists for New Jersey, and Travis Zajac scored his fourth goal. Jean-Sébastien Dea, who has spent the last two seasons in Pittsburgh, has two assists.
The Devils stopped a series of three games with their first win on the road. They were outclassed 15 to 6 in the losing streak.
Keith Kinkaid made 35 saves for New Jersey, who has won four of his last five games against Pittsburgh.
Jamie Oleksiak scored for the Penguins, who lost four times in a row.
Prior to his victory, Pittsburgh led the opposition 23-6 in a four-game winning streak. It's only the third time that the Penguins have lost four straight games under Mike Sullivan and the first time, Pittsburgh loses four straight home games under the fourth-year head coach. Pittsburgh has won two wins in seven home games this season. He has won 30 home games each of the previous two seasons.
Matt Murray stopped 23 shots in two periods before being shot by Casey DeSmith, who made 11 saves. Murray has allowed at least four goals in each of his five starts at home.
Boyle gave the Devils a 2-1 lead in the first period by passing a Ben Lovejoy shot behind Murray from the top of the crease.
Boyle extended the lead with a power play goal in the second period. His redirection between the legs from the top of the fold made it a 3-1 game.
Boyle scored his second power play goal on a Taylor Hall goal with 19.7 seconds left in the second period. Hall has at least one point in 10 out of 12 games this season.
NOTES: F Devils Joey Anderson recorded his first point in the NHL. Penguins F Derick Brassard (lower body) missed his fifth game. He has not skated since October 25th. Devils F Marcus Johansson added his 200th assistant to the NHL. Devils D Andy Greene played in his 800th career game. Devils F Stefan Noesen (upper body) missed his second consecutive game. The Devils wore a "Stronger Than Hate" sticker on their helmets, sporting the team's logo and the Star of David. This was in response to the tragic shootings that took place last month in the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh.
