A contest organized by Kinkaider Brewing helped support Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Companies have been invited to participate in an arm for a cause. The creatively decorated bras were suspended in the bar and voted by the public. Each vote costs $ 1, with funds donated to the GRACE Cancer Foundation Local, a non-profit organization that provides assistance to families in the Grand Island region battling cancer.
The contest, which drew 14 participants, was the first of its kind at Kinkaider Brewing.
"We were just trying to find something different to raise funds for the GRACE Foundation and fun to attract the community," said Delene Dilsaver, Executive Director of Kinkaider Brewing.
The designs included a bra decorated in Hershey Kisses with a note saying "goodbye to cancer," and another adorned with dozens of pieces of sugar to remind "keep the bumps out of your cup".
Dilsaver said the contest was a fun way to draw attention to breast cancer awareness, observed every month of October.
"It triggers a conversation. People may think it's strange at first, but when you tell them, they smile and say it makes sense. It's a different way of conveying an important message, "she said.
The month of October raises awareness about breast cancer, the second most common cancer among women behind skin cancer, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
An event such as Kinkaider Brewing draws attention to the illness that one in eight women will develop during her lifetime. Each year, it is estimated that more than 252,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and about 40,500 will die of it.
The votes started on Friday and ran until Saturday night. The winner received a $ 100 gift card from Kinkaider. Final tabulations will be announced Tuesday by the GRACE Cancer Foundation.
Along with fundraising during the voting process, Kinkaider also raised funds for GRACE by selling one-dollar beers during the week. Last year, the company sold 50-cent beers throughout the month of October as part of a fundraising campaign valued at approximately $ 2,500. Dilsaver hoped to raise at least that amount through the bra decorating contest.
Sarah Koch, Executive Director of the GRACE Cancer Foundation, said she was grateful for the awareness generated by the event.
"We would especially like to thank Kinkaider and the companies in the region who participated in this year's first Kinkaider annual Bras for a Cause event," she said.
"Thanks to the generosity and compassion of the Grand Island community, we can continue to make a positive impact on the lives of cancer patients and their families in the region."
