Bradley Cooper made sure to honor previous iterations of A star is born in his next film.
The director for the first time, 43, has spoken with FilmStruck to discuss his reinvention of the film in an exclusive PEOPLE clip taken from the interview.
Cooper plays the musician Jackson Maine, who struggles for personal problems while helping an emerging artist, Ally (Lady Gaga), achieve his musical career dreams.
Maine takes its name from the first two versions of the film – the 1937 film with Fredric March as Norman Maine and the 1954 version with Judy Garland in which actor James Mason took over Norman's torch.
Cooper was also aware of a familiar line in the first three movies, in which a version of his character asks his main wife "another look at you".

"There is a bit of Where is Waldo? in the movie, "Cooper said." It was fun cinematically. [Gaga] sings the preamble of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" as she climbed the ramp to get to work. It was a nod to Judy Garland. Even though it was not sung [in the previous films]oddly enough, it was the first song we had to learn at university. "
"I've always had this in mind that I wanted Ally to sing this song," he continued. "And interestingly, when I introduced him to Stefani [Gaga’s real name is Stefani Germanotta]"It's so crazy that you know because many people do not even know the preamble," she said. "I used to sing that when I was a kid."
"It's a bit classic, it was a nod to Judy Garland," Cooper explained.
