NEWTOWN SQUARE, Pennsylvania (AP) – Keegan Bradley beat Justin Rose in the playoffs to win the wet BMW Championship on Monday for his first PGA Tour victory in six years.

Although Rose was a finalist in the FedEx Cup playoff at Aronimink, he failed to climb the world rankings. Rose was No. 1 in the world and became the 22nd player to reach first place since the start of the ranking in 1986.

Bradley, who shot 6-under-64 on the final lap to finish at 20 under, threw his arms at the gray sky and the drizzle as a sign of celebration and signaled to his family on the 18th hole. He threw in the air his young son, Logan, who was not even born in 2012, the last time Bradley had won on the tour.

"I have done a lot of things over the last six years," Bradley said. "I kind of fell off the radar there for a little while, it's hard to get from the Ryder Cup teams to the Presidents Cup teams and to be out of the top 100 in the world."

Bradley finished with his fourth career win and the first since the 2012 WGC-Bridgestone Invitational. He will be heading to Maui to start next year for the Sentry Champions Tournament.

Rose could have won in regulation but came out of the last hole to force the playoffs.

He fell short in the playoffs, missing a 5-by-putt that would have kept him alive. Rose, 38, had loved golf courses on the outskirts of Philadelphia. He won the AT & T National 2010 at Aronimink and the 2013 American Open at Merion.

He did not receive a trophy on this trip. But a ranking No. 1 will do the trick. Rose, who has doubled Dustin Johnson, joins Nick Faldo, Lee Westwood and Luke Donald as the only English to reach first place.

"I am delighted to be the world's number 1," Rose said. "Children's dreams, do you see what I mean?"

Rose leads Bryson DeChambeau, who won the first two playoffs in the FedEx Cup standings.

It was an amazing game even finished Monday after the rain soaked the course at night and the tee times improved. But it was raining only slightly and the players complained little about the state of the course, even though the paths had become a muddy mess for the gallery.

As usual, there were a lot of people around Tiger Woods.

Woods made even more noise – he has done a lot of things in the last few months in front of the biggest galleries of all the courses – and took a shot in the lead when he managed the birdie on No. 9 in 31.

But he missed the green on the 10th and did a bogey. He found a bunker on the par-3 14th for another bogey. And it was the kind of day where more than one mistake was going to be expensive. Woods was found with a 65.

That was Aronimink's note that Woods had a score of 263 to 72 holes for the sixth time in his career. The other five times he won; this one earned him a tie for sixth place.

"I thought I had to shoot something around 62 today to have a chance," Woods said. "And I do not think that would have been enough."

Woods did not hesitate to return to the championship for the first time since 2013. It was about the time he was just starting to face back pain. He had his fourth back surgery last April, and at the time of last year, he had just been whitened and putt.

"To say that I came back to the championship after what I experienced is a great success," Woods said.

Jordan Spieth will not join him. Spieth started 27th in the FedEx Cup standings and took a step back, finishing with a 73 to tie for 55th. He fell from the top 30 and will miss the Tour Championship for the first time.

That means he has only played 24 tournaments this year, including the Ryder Cup. Since he has not added a tournament to his schedule that he has not participated in for the last four years, he is violating the PGA tour planning policy.

It remains to determine the sentence. Spieth is the first player to violate the policy, which began last year.

"Obviously, I accept what it is good and ahead to try to add one each year, but it 's a bit difficult," Spieth said. .

Later Monday, American captain Jim Furyk will announce another selection for the Ryder Cup.
