Brandon Phillips, Red Sox Championship Player Wins Home Game

The Boston Red Sox won a stellar victory over the Atlanta Braves with a two-run homer of Brandon Phillips.

Brandon Phillips knows how to make a good impression. All he did during his Boston Red Sox debut was a wild comeback win with a bat swing.

The Red Sox met early Wednesday afternoon in Atlanta, trailing the Braves 7-1 until the eighth inning. That's when the bats of Boston finally managed to blow up six points in the frame.

Freddie Freeman, the Braves' first baseman, responded with a solo run at the end of the round to bring Atlanta back to the top. Those who are not fans of Red Sox may think that it was a nice comeback.

Of course, it was good. Except that Freeman's heroics had nothing on Phillips.

With two outs in the ninth, Phillips took the place with the game on the line. He did not waste time swinging for the fences, bringing a powerful punch to the first shot seen from Braves. Minter. Boom! Circuit with two races. Return finished.

The Philips circuit was the first in the ninth inning or later by a Red Sox hitter making his team debut.

It's a great way to make friends in a new team.

Phillips, who started the game on second base before slipping to the third goal late in the game, finished 1-for-3 with a pair of steps, two run-up and three runs.

Phillips debuted last season with the Braves, before being sent to the Los Angeles Angels on a waiver in August. Maybe there was a story of revenge for Phillips in this game?

At the start of the summer, the Red Sox signed a contract with Phillips for a minor league, hoping he would provide insurance for second base if Dustin Pedroia could not return. Boston eventually reached an agreement for Ian Kinsler, canceling Phillips' need and delaying his debut until the September expansion.

The 37-year-old has hit a solid .304 / .348 / .474 with five homers and 26 runs produced in 44 minor league matches this season. Clearly, he still has something in the tank. His playing time may be limited at the end of the day, but times like this could offer him additional opportunities. If nothing else, Phillips is known to be a good guy from the club. He will certainly be popular with his teammates after this game.

Phillips joins the team as the only player in franchise history to wear number 0 on his jersey. He may have a zero on his back but he is No. 1 in the eyes of the Red Sox Nation. At least for today.
