Brazil's high court saves leading candidate in racism trial

RIO DE JANEIRO – Brazil's highest court has spared only a far-right candidate for a trial for racism.

A court on Tuesday 3 to 2 voted to lay a charge of racism against Jair Bolsonaro, who leads the elections ahead of the October elections, and was stabbed and wounded last week at a campaign event.

Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the candidate had the right to express rude and disrespectful views towards blacks in a 2017 speech.

Bolsonaro said at the time that members of rural settlements founded by the descendants of slaves, called "quilombolas", "are not even good at procreating".

He also talked about the weight of these descendants of slaves using a measure that Brazilian farmers apply to animals.

Moraes said that these comments did not go beyond the limits of his freedom of expression.
