A JetBlue flight was circled by the police at JFK airport.

The aircraft reportedly triggered a major security incident after the pilots stopped communicating with air traffic control.

Photos showed the Airbus A321 on the tarmac surrounded by police cars, ambulances and FBI vehicles with flashing lights.

Flight B61623 was scheduled to leave JFK International Airport for Los Angeles at 19:30 local time.

A passenger tweeted on board the flight, revealing that the armed police had boarded the jet.

Tony Schwartz wrote: "I am on a Jet Blue flight to JFK who lost his communications, created a security crisis, 10 heavily armed cops boarded the plane and left after an hour and a half runway.

Her friend Alexa Curtis shared shocking images of people with their hands above their heads as the armed police stormed the plane.

She wrote: "Woah, my worst nightmare. [JetBlue] JFK at LAX right now, honestly thought we were going to die. I AM LIVING THANK YOU GOSH I MEDITATE U GUYS what's going on "

Later, she shared a video of heavily armed officers aboard the jet as he was towed to the door.
