RANSON – Jefferson Medical Center will offer discounted mammograms on October Saturdays for Breast Cancer Awareness Month and hospital officials are also planning a free breast cancer expert conference.
The conference of Dr. Sanaz Soltani, hematologist / oncologist at the WVU Cancer Institute, is scheduled for 19 hours. October 17 at the Health Sciences Center auditorium on the campus of the Berkeley Medical Center in Martinsburg.
Soltani will take stock of breast cancer, including prevention, detection and treatment.
To promote the importance of prevention and early detection, the WVU Cancer Institute will offer next month mammography clinics at Ranson Hospital and WVU Medicine Berkeley Medical Center.
Tomo 3D Digital Mammography Screening Clinics will be held every Saturday in October at the Berkeley Medical Center Women's Imaging Center, 880 Tennessee Ave. Martinsburg and the Women's Imagery Center at 207 S. Preston in Ranson.
Hospital officials say the latest technology allows radiologists to identify and characterize individual breast structures without confusing overlapping tissues. The images are used to produce a series of slices of a millimeter in thickness that can be seen as a 3D reconstruction of the breast.
Mammograms will be offered for $ 60 (cash, check or credit card only), which includes testing and interpretation by a radiologist. The discount mammography program is open to anyone aged 35 and over.
Although a doctor's order is not required to participate in mammography clinics, any doctor without a doctor will be assigned a doctor to receive the test results. All patients must register in advance.
Hospital officials say that one in eight women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer during her lifetime.
They say that breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women and the second leading cause of cancer death among women. The best method to reduce deaths from breast cancer is early detection. Clinical breast exams, breast self-exams and mammograms can save lives.
