The Big 12 publicly rebuked Breckyn Hager on Monday after the Texas defense slammed its rival Oklahoma following an interview with the press on Saturday night.
Wearing a cowboy hat and sunglasses with his braided hair, Hager was returning to the locker room after Texas' victory over Iowa State when a reporter informed him that the Sooners were coming from give 40 points to Kansas.
Hager turned around and said, "Hey, or have no defense."
Hager stopped again, pointed to a nearby clock and added, "Wait, wait – it's 11:12 and what, yeah, it's still nil."
Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby said Hager's comments violated the league's sport and ethical conduct policies.
Breckyn Hager broke the conference rule that banned coaches, student-athletes, sports department staff and university staff from making negative comments about other member institutions for his remarks about the University of Toronto. Oklahoma, "said Bowlsby in a statement. "This is the second violation of the sports rules of the conference by Mr. Hager, so he receives a public reprimand and should publicly apologize for his inappropriate remarks."
In a statement released by Texas, Hager said that he was "really sorry".
"I had no malicious intent when I made my comments about Oklahoma, which included a phrase used by fans, but I must understand that it's different from me." My thought process was that it would be a fun and light load in the biggest rivalry in college football my family has played in for many years, but I can see now that it was not the right way to do it "said Hager. Texas beat Oklahoma 48 to 45 last month. If they both win this weekend, they will meet in the Big 12 championship game.
The Sooners have been the only team since 1936, the year the Associated Press poll began, to drop 40 points in three straight games and win all three.
