The Dallas Cowboys were watching the game in overtime on Sunday with a chance to take first place in the NFC East.
Behind Washington's rival Redskins, 20-17, just three seconds from time, the Cowboys put beginner kicker Brett Maher in the opportunity to become a hero, facing a placement attempt to tie the game to 47 yards.
Costly late penalty for Cowboys
Then there was movement. Redskins rookie Da'Ron Payne took the finish line before the restart, seeming to give Maher a five-yard cushion for shooting.

Ladouceur for a speedy offense, attempting to make a 52-yard attempt for Maher.
Miss lands in Washington in first place
Maher's kick followed the distance, but stood to the left to secure victory in Washington.
With the 20-17 win, Washington improves to 4-2 to take first place in the NFC East while Dallas drops to third place at 3-4.

The Cowboys return upset
The fielding attempt came after Dallas scored a late touchdown and forced a punt after 20-10 in the final minutes of the game.
The Cowboys reduced the deficit to 20-17 with 12 74-yard runs that ended with quarterback Dak Prescott, who scored the third goal and scored the goal on the one-meter line with a gain of 1:37.
Washington managed to run just 28 seconds from taking possession that ensued. Quarterback Alex Smith was exhausted while he was trying to fight for a first try. The clock's stop preserved the last timeout of Dallas.
The Cowboys took control of their 36-yard line after a punt in Washington and led the ball 30 yards to try to score.
But Maher's kick that looked good from 47 was right next to the scorer at 52 meters, preventing a late collapse of the Redskins.
The Prescott business figure is proving expensive
Prescott was solid for the Cowboys, scoring 273 yards and a touchdown without interceptions. But a critical fumbling on Ryan Kerrigan's bag deep in Dallas made the difference.
Redskins linebacker Preston Smith recovered the hole for a touchdown that gave Washington a 20-10 lead with 4:55 remaining.
It was a balanced match as both teams struggled against each other. The Cowboys totaled 323 yards on offense, compared to 305 yards for the Redskins.
The turnovers ended up playing the difference. Prescott lost a second fumble in addition to the one that led to Smith's landing, which is the only two turnovers in the game.
