There are four types of diabetes that affect how your body handles glucose, a kind of sugar, in your blood. Although your blood still contains glucose, too, it's not good for your health. Diabetes means your blood glucose is too high.
- prediabetes This is when your blood sugar is high but not enough for a diagnosis of diabetes. Although 86 million American adults have prediabetes, only 1 in 10 know that they have it.
- Type 1 diabetes usually diagnosed in children and young adults, but it is a life-long illness. If you have this type of diabetes, your body does not make insulin. So you have to take it every day.
- Type 2 diabetes is the most common type of diabetes – about 9 out of 10 people with diabetes have type 2 diabetes. You can get type 2 diabetes at any age, even during your childhood.
- Gestational Diabetes occurs when a woman is pregnant. This type of diabetes is caused by a change in the way a woman's body reacts to insulin, a hormone, during her pregnancy.
People with diabetes are encouraged to take courses in diabetes self-management in their local health departments.
Living and managing diabetes can be difficult. However, people can live busy and active lives, even if they have diabetes.
