There are four types of diabetes that affect how your body handles glucose, a kind of sugar, in your blood. Although your blood still contains glucose, too, it's not good for your health. Diabetes means your blood glucose is too high.

  1. prediabetes This is when your blood sugar is high but not enough for a diagnosis of diabetes. Although 86 million American adults have prediabetes, only 1 in 10 know that they have it.
  2. Type 1 diabetes usually diagnosed in children and young adults, but it is a life-long illness. If you have this type of diabetes, your body does not make insulin. So you have to take it every day.
  3. Type 2 diabetes is the most common type of diabetes – about 9 out of 10 people with diabetes have type 2 diabetes. You can get type 2 diabetes at any age, even during your childhood.
  4. Gestational Diabetes occurs when a woman is pregnant. This type of diabetes is caused by a change in the way a woman's body reacts to insulin, a hormone, during her pregnancy.

People with diabetes are encouraged to take courses in diabetes self-management in their local health departments.

Living and managing diabetes can be difficult. However, people can live busy and active lives, even if they have diabetes.
